If you were there I'm sure you'll have a few of your own but here are my personal highlights from the second Cheltenham Design Festival.
Richard Seymour [Seymour Powell]
For an achingly current view on the next big things to hit the human race you'll probably need to go see Richard speak in person. A lot of the content is sensitive and therefore not recordable without permission. But, to whet your appetite, check out his last TED talk here. Google for more of his genius.
Nick Jankel [We Create]
Nick is so multi-talented it's hard to list them all here. What got my interest was his piece on how our beliefs impact us. How our behaviours come from our beliefs and how hard or easy these beliefs are to change. There's more at Nick's site or go to the We Create site - tons of video out there and don't be put off by the length of some of these. They're worth sitting still for that long.
Craig Oldham
A designer in the truest sense, Craig believes that everyone has a designer within them - fixing the problems that affect our own daily lives. He's genuine, genuinely honest, funny and insightful. See more of Craig at www.craigoldham.co.uk/
Fred Deakin
I loved Freds energy. And his collaborative spirit - it's the future you know. I also believe he's right that commercial success will depend upon the inclusion of design thinking to the point of Design roles in the boardroom. Interactive piece of the day was Electricity comes from other planets.
There were more individuals but the real star was Design Thinking - the optimism for its future necessity. Sub-plots were the need for designers to take on the fundamental role of 'Problem Solvers' rather than 'Stylists' and to design with sustainability in mind. Currently this would seem commercial suicide but when discussed in the terms of The Great Recovery Project it all makes sense.
I'm looking forward to TEDxLondonBusinessSchool in a week or so. We'll see what kind of stimulus that throws up.
Right, that's it. Now go bring some observation and insight to some problems...
